On this day: Sunil Gavaskar scored 36 runs off 174 balls in a World Cup match

The International Cricket Council (ICC) conducted the first ever cricket World Cup in 1975 with eight teams - Australia, East Africa, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies.

The 15 matches were played in a 60-over format and the tournament turned out to be very successful. The tournament was named as Prudential Cup after its sponsors Prudential Assurance Company.

India kicked-off its campaign against England and faced a humiliating fate that day.

Formidable England thrashed Indian bowlers and posted the first 300-plus score (334/4) in an ODI with the help of Dennis Amiss' heroic inning of 137 runs.

India displayed a poor show and ended up scoring 132 for a loss of three wickets in 60 wickets.

Indian Opener Sunil Gavaskar didn't seem to be in his element that day as he played one of the slowest ODI knocks.

Gavaskar scored just 36 runs off 174 balls and remained unbeaten. India managed 132/3 and lost the match to England by 202 runs.

Later, the celebrated player couldn't provide a proper explanation for the way he played but listed inexperience as of the reasons.

Now when even T20 cricket has made a comfortable space in the international cricket, it's hard to wonder which player could come up with such a slow inning in future. Any guesses?
